I wouldn’t say I’m an avid fan of reality TV but The Traitors was compelling viewing. Once I started drawing investment lessons from it there was no stopping!
Series 3 just finished and it was a big hit for the BBC. But series 2 had better investment lessons.

What is The Traitors about? A summary …
25 strangers with different backgrounds come together in a Scottish castle to compete for £100,000.
On day 1 the show secretly selects 3 of them to be the Traitors. Their job is to “murder” the others (the Faithfuls), one by one, aiming to eliminate them all. Without arousing suspicions of their identity.
The Traitors have to master deception and blend into the group to gain their trust and avoid being outed.
If successful, the Traitors win the prize. If the Faithfuls avoid being influenced by the Traitors and instead follow the evidence to “out” them, that will lead them to the prize.
The Financial System …
Think of the Traitors as the financial system.
The Traitors have full visibility: they know the identity of all players. But the Faithfuls (think: ordinary investors) only know their own identity.
This information advantage can be used by the Traitors to deceive the Faithfuls and gain their trust.
But if the Faithfuls figure out the system and avoid being influenced, it is they who will be the winners.
In the Investment Academy we show exactly that. By retaking the information advantage we show how to avoid being influenced and use the system to our advantage to achieve financial freedom faster.
Lessons from The Traitors …
The investment industry is also a master in deception!
Fund Management and Pension Companies want us to believe investing is complex and they can do a better job than we can. The evidence shows they can’t, as we’ll see below.
Wealth Managers and IFAs work in the same way, for big fees. But they are charming about it, using Like and Trust tactics!
Banks love us to keep our cash with them. We effectively lend them cheap money which is re-lent for a big profit.

Exploiting our Knowledge Gaps and Fears …
Like the Traitors, the investment industry also has an information advantage. NOT in making good returns, but in understanding our knowledge gaps and our fears.
With this awareness they can cleverly market their services; using tricks that make investing look more complex than it is. And making them look cleverer than they are.
All with credibility-padding to gain our trust and persuade us to use them. So we don’t eliminate them from our needs. Sounds just like the Traitors!

Simply buy the Evidence, not the Marketing …
The investment providers have to be creative in their marketing to target our knowledge gaps and appeal to our fears.
To beat the system we simply follow the evidence, not the marketing.
Understanding these 3 things will help you do that:
- Most investment providers and professional managers consistently underperform – see the evidence here
- They use clever and creative marketing tricks to make us buy – these tricks are revealed in my video and article
- Periodically, check your returns and fees paid to your IFA or pension funds. Compare them to what the market itself has provided. More info here on this
Remember: Don’t keep paying excessive fees for poor returns! Ensure your retirement funds are working for you, and not someone else.
